One Body, Many Opinions!

If we all follow the same Bible then why are there so many different denominations?  Why are there so many interpretations? Which one is right and are there any easy answers? Jesus prays for his church to be one but there sure seems like a lot of topics we can't agree on.  In this course we will spend some time looking at how we read the Bible and how we develop theology.  We will explore some topics where diverse opinions still exist, such as communion, baptism, women in ministry and the end times.  The goal is not to pick sides and fortify our positions.  The goal is to challenge ourselves with fresh perspectives, generate discussion, and build unity in our diversity.

“Christ Alone: Ephesians and Colossians”

For the apostle Paul, it’s always about Jesus. In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul calls followers of Christ to more fully understand who they really are 'In Christ', and the radically transformative power of that new-found position. This not only transforms how we relate to God but powerfully transforms a segmented and sinful humanity into one new family under Christ. His letter to the Colossian Christians makes the same bold claim: “there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all” (3:11)!

"Who do you say I am?" Jesus put this question to his followers in the midst of competing ideas about who he really was. As time went on, different people and different groups sought to answer this all-important question: Who is Jesus? In the early centuries of the Church many ideas about Jesus were formed and circulated. It was the church's challenge and privilege to wrestle with Scripture and reason, in seeking out the truth about Jesus. They had to navigate different ideas and different interpretations of scripture to properly articulate the truth: that Jesus is both God and Man. In this course we retrace the discussions of the early church fathers, wrestle with the scriptures they wrestled with, examine the creeds that were written as a result – and discover again for ourselves who this Jesus really is.

Why is the Book of Hebrews included in the New Testament? It’s full of Jewish allusion to rituals that seem completely irrelevant to us as 21stC Gentile Christians. But God has chosen to have it included in His Word. He knew that we, 2000 years later in a little country at the edge of the earth, would be reading it, so it must mean something to us today. Our identity as Christians is in God. If we profess a Christian faith, we must understand the beginnings of that faith in order to appreciate the principles that govern it. Society exerts pressure on the church, and unless the church understands the foundational principles of her faith, her God will be formed in society’s image. “The Church does not know who she is, because she does not know who she was.”

The Book of Hebrews reveals the Author and the Completer of our faith, and in the midst of modern political conflict, and even in the midst of Covid, God offers us both encouragement and warning to not drift away from that very faith that gives us hope.
