Year for God

YEAR FOR GOD Internship (Non-NZQA)

Not sure how God wants you to contribute in the world?

Looking to do something different before you head off to a job or further study?

Need some headspace before diving into the next big thing?

Maybe Emmaus’ YEAR FOR GOD is exactly what you need……

YEAR FOR GOD is all about helping you to:

  • Discover your God-given strengths and your part in God’s plans for the world

  • Understand what you believe about core Christian truths and why

  • Wrestle with how to live well in the world

  • Find your purpose and your community.

Emmaus’ Year for God will give you a solid foundation for whatever God calls you to next. You’ll get a much clearer picture of who you are, what you believe and how God wants you to make a difference in his world. You’ll be part of a friendly, experienced and safe learning community that’s been training Christian leaders in the Manawatu for 15 years.

What does a Year for God look like?

It’s an internship: a combination of learning, practical experience and mentoring.

  • Participate one day a week in a welcoming and relaxed learning community (6 hours)

  • Work in a practical ministry situation that could be with youth, local church, Christian organisation or potentially a Christian school (20 hours)

  • Meet with a mentor for tailored coaching, helping you make sense of what God is saying and doing in your life (1 hour fortnightly in your ministry; 2 hours per term with an Emmaus coach)

What’s different about Year for God?

  • More one-on-one coaching that maximizes your learning and deepens your understanding of yourself

  • Accelerated growth in character, maturity and your ability to work well with others

  • Being part of a community of like-minded people that eat and pray together and are there for each other

  • You get to ‘try out’ different ministry activities before making a big commitment.

What will I be learning?

What is Emmaus?

Emmaus is a Christian training college for adults who want to go deeper in their Christian faith, life, and knowledge of God. It was set up under the Palmerston North Christian Leaders Association in 2009 and has been offering night courses and an internship programme ever since. It is run by an independent Christian Trust Board, and it uses gifted Christian teachers from around the region. It’s inter-denominational, and welcomes people from all backgrounds and church communities to be part of a warm, welcoming and relaxed learning community. Emmaus is not NZQA-accredited. Check our our website for more information, including our student pastoral care policy.

Emmaus is located at 91 Mihaere Drive, Palmerston North, in L Block adjacent to Cornerstone Christian school. All classes take place here.

Some Q & As

Paid/Unpaid ministry?

The Emmaus Internship is not eligible for NZ Government loans or subsidies. Interns may therefore include paid ministry in their ministry hours. However, these should be noted separately in the intern’s ministry plan.

Can my Emmaus internship be cross-credited into an accredited programme?

Because the Emmaus internship is not NZQA-accredited, it won’t be recognised by most accredited institutions. However, many institutions have a policy of “recognising prior learning”, and MAY accept some of the Emmaus internship work (such as academic courses) as cross-credits into a certificate or diploma. Any such decision is entirely at the discretion of the respective academic institution.
